The Department of Economics ( Economics in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce) offers a selection of subjects and a Major and an Honours program in Economics to Bachelor of Arts students.

 1. Faculty of Arts requirements

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are permitted to enrol in a range of subjects offered by other faculties, but must complete a minimum of 50 points of first-year subjects and 100 points of second/third-year subjects in areas of study approved by the Faculty of Arts. See Arts-approved subject requirement for more information.

BA students wishing to undertake a Major in Economics will need to plan their course carefully to ensure they meet both departmental prerequisites and Faculty requirements.

Combined course students will not usually be eligible to enrol in any subject(s) from this area of study: please consult an Arts Faculty course adviser for more information.

 2. Prerequisites

Students intending to Major in Economics should note that Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite for 316-130 Quantitative Methods 1. Introductory Microeconomics and Macroeconomics and one of Business Statistics of Quantitative Methods must be taken before entering second year Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.

 3. Requirements for a Major

A Major in Economics in the Bachelor of Arts degree usually consists of ten 12.5 point subjects totalling 125 points. It comprises:

 316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics1 and 2
AND one of:
 316-129 Business Statistics2
 316-130 Quantitative Methods 12

Second year
Both:Semester

 316-202 Intermediate MicroeconomicsSemester 1, repeated Summer
AND one of:

 4. Entry to Honours

The prerequisites for entry to fourth year Honours in Economics are:

Permission may be granted to substitute other third year Economics subjects for up to two of the subjects (except 316-313) listed above. The omitted subjects must then be taken as part of the fourth year of the Honours degree in Economics.

The Faculty of Arts will not admit to Honours a candidate who has previously graduated Bachelor of Commerce (Honours or ordinary degree).

 5.2. Combined Honours

It is possible to combine Honours in Economics with several areas of study, for example Economics and History, Economics and Philosophy, and Economics and Political Science. Other combinations may be considered. In all cases, candidates are required to obtain approval from the Heads of Department concerned and the Faculty of Arts. Any student interested in undertaking Combined Honours should contact the Faculties of Arts or Economics and Commerce for more information.
