The Centre for Ancient and Classical Languages was formed in 1998 to consolidate and develop the teaching of ancient languages, especially Ancient Greek, Latin and Classical Hebrew, within the Faculty of Arts. The Centre offers students the opportunity to study Akkadian, Ancient Greek, Aramaic, Biblical Hebrew, Latin, and Semitics, especially Syriac. Study of these areas covers both linguistic proficiency and the contemporary interpretation of ancient world texts and traditions.
Although the Centre does not offer either a Major or Honours in Ancient and Classical Languages, students can undertake Ancient and Classical Language subjects as part of a Major or Honours study in Classics and Archaeology.
The Centre for Ancient and Classical Languages offers three different areas of language study:
Ancient Greek
Latin
Semitics (including Akkadian, Aramaic, Biblical Hebrew, and Syriac)
All are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year.
Latin and Ancient Greek are available as a beginners stream or a post-VCE stream.
The Centre offers two streams of Ancient Greek:
Beginners
The beginners stream is available to students who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Greek. It is available to students at any year level, although students intending to study Ancient Greek are recommended to commence their language study in their first year.
Post-VCE
The post-VCE stream is usually only available to students who have obtained a pass in VCE Ancient Greek, or its approved equivalent.
Students should note that a sub-stream of intermediate study of Ancient Greek is offered within both the beginners and post-VCE streams. The intermediate sub-stream is offered in alternate years.
The structure of the Ancient Greek streams usually takes the following forms:

Prospective employers of graduates in Arts are often aware of the benefits deriving from rigorous study of the ancient world and its texts and intellectual traditions. This means that the studies offered by the Centre are of general relevance. There are also specific opportunities, especially in Latin, in the field of secondary education.
