Subject Description

Women writers have come to the fore in Spain in the twentieth century particularly since the Civil War period. This subject is a general introduction to the works of some of these writers and examination of their place in Spanish literature and society. This will be followed by a more detailed study of some specific works. Students who complete this subject should: have an understanding of the major literary trends and developments in 20th century Spain, particularly since the Civil War; have an appreciation of the important role of women writers within those trends and developments; have an understanding of the status of women in Spanish society (pre- and post-Civil War) and the reflection of that status (and of Spanish society in general) in Spanish women's writing; and have an understanding of the impact of Spanish feminism and feminist literary theory on Spanish women's writing.

Assessment

Class participation, one 3000-word essay, one 2000-word written assignment, one 20-minute oral presentation.
