Subject Description

The focus of this course is the present reality of Spain in its cultures and linguistic diversity, the role of Spain in the modern world, the position of women in contemporary Spanish society and the historical background to the modern world (civil war, transition from dictatorship to democracy). In relation to these facets of Spain, a range of films, as well as texts and at least one painting - "Guernica" - will be studied.

Assessment

One 500-word written exercise, one 1500-word essay, one 20-minute oral presentation, final test and class participation.

A Reader (which includes a selection of short stories, journal articles, essays and short plays), will be available from the Department
