Available to second or post-second year students who have passed, with an H3 or better, in another Romance language such as Spanish 1 or 2 or an approved equivalent.

Subject Description

This subject is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language (in its Brazilian variety) and to Portuguese and Brazilian culture. The student will acquire the language through a range of activities: language laboratory exercises, computer aided tasks, role play in small groups and pairs and the study of a wide spectrum of audio, video and written materials. Students who complete this subject should: be able to carry out a basic conversation in Portuguese; be able to comprehend and produce simple written text; and have a mastery of a reasonable range of grammatical structures.

Assessment

Aural comprehension and transcription exercises; reading performance and comprehension; oral production; written exercises; one 2-hour written exam.

Prescribed Texts

Reading lists will be available at the beginning of the semester.
