Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable students to understand:

  • the system nature of agriculture food and fibre production;
  • the cultural inputs and outputs of agricultural production systems;
  • the scientific and technological basis of agricultural production systems and the use of technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

The content includes: Introduction to and study of the components and technology of agricultural production systems as they apply to the dairy, pig, broad acre and horticulture industries; Application of biological and financial concepts; soils; mechanisation; environmental controls. Whilst all industries will be discussed, greater emphasis will be placed upon the broad acre and horticulture industries.

Assessment

1000 word assignment and a plant collection (20% each); two hour examination (60%)
