Subject Description

This subject provides students with knowledge and practical experience in:

• the role and significance of remnant vegetation in the rural Australian landscape;
• the conservation and quality of remnant vegetation in Australia;
• the impact of past and present management on the ecology of remnant vegetation;
• the role of habitat corridors in the rural landscape;
• the socio-economic factors relating to the conservation and management of remnant vegetation.

The content includes: The history, distribution and extent of remnant vegetation in Australia, the ecology of remnant vegetation, with reference to quality, influences and impacts, the conservation and management of threatened flora and fauna, the role of habitat corridors, past, present and future management strategies for remnant vegetation, perceptions and attitudes towards remnant vegetation In the rural landscape, and the influence of this on remnant vegetation management.

Assessment

Three assignments of 5000, 3000 and 2000 words (50%, 30% and 20% respectively).
