A 2-hour practical class and a 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should have gained skills in:

  • harmonisation and transposition of melodies by sight and by ear;
  • tonal and atonal improvisation techniques;
  • repertoire of age-appropriate material suitable for therapy work;
  • composition of songs and group song writing;

Students will also gain supportive counselling skills applicable in music therapy with individuals and groups; individual and group song writing techniques; techniques applicable with people experiencing brain impairment.

Topics covered include: introduction to counselling theory and its applications in music therapy using live and pre-recorded music; song writing techniques; techniques in harmonisation, transposition and improvisation; composition of original songs.

Assessment

One 1500-word assignment and the composition of two original songs (50%); a practical test (50%).
