Subject Description | Students will gain an extensive knowledge of selected works of the period and their place in society, a working knowledge of the musicological scholarship, theoretical and musical sources for the topics studied, and a capacity to evaluate modern performances of works of this period. Topics covered include studies of selected areas of European music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance which will investigate a cross-section of repertory, manuscript and printed sources and their notation, theoretical writings, performance practices, social history and current issues in scholarship and performance. |
Assessment | A 3-hour examination (50%); one written assignment of approximately 3,000 words. |
