Subject Description | Students will gain an appreciation of the historical development of the practice of music therapy; an understanding of the philosophical principles upon which music therapy is based; a knowledge of the theoretical approaches in using music as a therapeutic medium with children; a comprehensive knowledge of research findings in relation to music therapy methods for children; an understanding of the therapeutic processes in providing treatment and special education services. Topics covered include: principles and processes of music therapy; historical development of the profession; theoretical basis of the use of music in therapy; the application of music therapy methods in special education and clinical treatment programs; and study of research literature. |
Assessment | One 1500-word assignment (30%); one 3-hour examination, (70%). |
