Subject Description

On completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate basic playing, maintenance and tuning techniques on at least one instrument from the brass family and on the standard percussion instruments, and will have acquired skills relevant to the advanced performance of improvised music in the school setting. They will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of the major curricular trends in music education in the 20th century.

There will be a semester each of group study of brass and percussion techniques; Improvisation workshop; the teaching philosophies of Orff, Kodaly, Jacques Dalcroze, Paynter and Schafer in relation to contemporary practice in classroom and instrumental playing.

Assessment

Improvisation workshop (35%); Second instrument (35%); Intro to Music Education (30%).
