Subject Description

On completion of this course, students should have a working knowledge of the principal sources of renaissance dance and an ability to dance the most popular court dances of the period.

The course covers practical instruction in a selection of popular renaissance court dances including the pavane, galliard, courante, almain, branle etc. Theoretical explanations of the nature of the dances, their sources, choreography and the role of dance in society.

Assessment

30 minute practical dance examination (50%); Written assignment of up to 2000 words (30%); Attendance and participation in classes (20%).
