A 1 hour class per week a one hour keyboard class per week

Subject Description

  • development of inner hearing via rhythmic and melodic sight reading exercises from both the textbooks and a broad cross-section of the music repertoire.
  • development of basic keyboard skills via a variety of exercises and repertoire that will enhance harmonic and aural awareness and provide a basis for simple accompaniment skills

Topics to be covered include:

  • Singing, playing and transcription of stepwise and triadic melodies in major and minor keys.
  • Singing, playing and transcription of basic rhythms using odd time signatures and changing metre.
  • Singing, playing and transcription of simple harmonic progressions.
  • Technical work in major keys, accompaniment patterns, transposition and simple pieces.

Assessment

  1. Weekly aural exercises and tests (40%).
  2. End of year aural viva voce (40%).
  3. End of year keyboard exam (20%). Keyboard majors and students who have attained the equivalent of AMEB Grade 4 may take this exam in Orientation Week.
  4. Students must attempt a), pass b) and pass c) to pass the subject.
