Subject Description

The subject will cover the following topics: the range of workplace hazards facing workers, the cost of workplace illness and injury, methods to control workplace hazards; a history of OHS and workers compensation legislation in Australia; institutions developing OHS standards in Australia; the OHS standards in Australian OHS legislation; enforcement of OHS legislation by the OHS inspectorates and the Director of Public Prosecutions; workplace arrangements under the Australian OHS legislation; workers compensation in Australia; the rehabilitation of injured workers; the future of OHS regulation in Australia and the rest of the world.

Assessment

(1) 1000 to 1500 word class paper worth (10%) of the final work: report on field work to be written up and submitted four weeks after 20 minute presentation to the class.

(2) Research Essay to 2500-3000 words worth (45%) of the final mark, to be submitted in the final week of the semester. The research essay can build on a students class paper.

(3) Final Exam 1 1/2 hours worth (45%) of the final mark.
