Subject Description

The central aim of this course is to examine and critically evaluate the ways in which the law plays a part in the relationships between couples, between parents and children, and between families and the State. The focus is on the family as a legal and social institution. The subject is divided into six main topics: (1) overview of family law in Australia; (2) the legal rules controlling creation and dissolution of marital status; (3) domestic violence; (4) children; (5) economic consequences of marriage and divorce; and (6) de facto relationships.

Assessment

Research Assignment 4000 words (40%) and Final Exam 2 hours (60%) or Final Exam 3 hours (100%).
