Subject Description | The presentation and analysis of issues on the planning agenda of different levels of government. The precise themes of the subject vary year by year. At present, the question running through the issues discussed is: how can urban planning better comprehend social and political diversity? Can multicultural planning be possible - in planning theory, forms of participation in planning, in contemporary planning practice at different urban locations and scales? Who are the 'publics' presently considered in planning theory and practice, if the notion of a universal community obligation, a 'public interest' in which planning works, can no longer be sustained? Visiting speakers and student presentations will provide a breadth of perspectives on such questions. Both Australian and overseas examples will be considered. |
Assessment | Written group assignment, with students presenting their work orally. Students to write individual essays from their group work, for assessment purposes. Maximum 5,000 words. |
