Any level one fine arts/architectural history subject offered by the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning (or permission of the Head of Department).

Subject Description

The course is characterised by a systematic treatment of architectural design, building construction, city planning and garden design in East Asia from ancient times to modern. Architecture as a socio-cultural phenomenon will be studies together with visual art, archaeological evidence, intellectual traditions, social context and economic forces. Students will develop (1) an understanding of the sources and historical development of Chinese and Japanese Architecture; (2) an appreciation of the cultural framework within which the tangible and intangible East Asian architectural heritage can be understood; (3) skills in information gathering, essay and report writing, visual and oral techniques to interpret/analyse buildings, places and gardens.

Assessment

An essay, major study (building model or CAD drawing) and class paper to the equivalent of not more than 7500 words.
