Subject Description

On completion of this subject, students will be thoroughly familiar with the properties of ophthalmic optical materials and the indications for their use; understand the optics of ophthalmic lenses, including contact lenses; be able to calculate the performance characteristics of lenses and optical devices and will be able to dispense prescriptions and check dispensed visual aids to Australian standards. The subject will cover the properties of ophthalmic materials, the optics of ophthalmic lenses; lens effectivity, transposition, obliquely crossed cylinders, high power lens forms and anisometropia, the principles of aberration control of spectacle lenses, best form and aspheric lenses, absorptive lenses, design of multifocals and low vision aids, aniseikonia and eikonic corrections, the optics of contact lenses, ophthalmic dispensing techniques; dispensing tolerances and prescription verification. The practical classes in first semester will introduce students to the processes of ophthalmic dispensing. The seminars will include practical calculation assignments.

Assessment

A practical examination in ophthalmic dispensing at the end of the first semester (10%); a practical examination in ophthalmic materials including contact lenses at the end of second semester (10%), a 3-hour end-of-year written examination. Assessment of calculation assignments contributes 10% of the final mark.
