Subject Description | The purpose of this subject is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms that control the growth of the eye and maintain its integrity throughout life in both health and disease. The topics to be studied include the chemistry and surface properties of tears; the structure and function of the cornea and maintenance of its transparency; the nature, production and drainage of the aqueous and the maintenance of intra-ocular pressure; the structure, growth and biochemistry of the crystalline lens of the eye; the structure and nature of the vitreous; the metabolism of the retina; the control of post natal growth of the eye; the aging of the eye and cataract. |
Assessment | A two hour written examination at the end of the semester. Practical work (10%). |
