Subject Description

By the end of this subject students should have a clear understanding, at an introductory level:

  • of evolution as a basis for explanation in biology;
  • of the historical development of evolutionary ideas.

The subject provides an introduction to evolution as a basis for explaining the distribution of species in space and time; geographic variation and adaptive radiation; the nature of evolutionary change; natural selection and adaptation.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination; essay work of up to 1200 words.
