Subject Description

An introduction to the physics of elementary particles - hadrons, leptons and quarks - is provided. By the end of this subject the student should have an overview of the properties of elementary particles, how they interact through strong, weak and electromagnetic forces, and how experiments in this field are performed. The subject content includes: the quark model of hadrons, charged-lepton and neutrino physics, strong and weak interactions, symmetries and conservations laws, experimental methods.

Assessment

A 1.5-hour end-of-semester written examination plus tests and/or assignments, set during the semester, which may account for up to 20% of the final mark.
