Subject Description

Introduction to past and present climates and climate change. Milankovitch cycles. Use of proxy data including signals in ice cores, corals, pollen in sediments, tree rings.

Indicators of past climates in the Australian region, particularly the Murray-Darling basin. Introduction to palaeo-oceanography and importance of ocean and ice processes in palaeoclimates. On completion of this subject, students should have an appreciation of climate change, past and future climates, and methods for diagnosing climatic information from proxy data.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination. Practical work and assignments will also be assessed.
