Subject Description

Sedimentary processes of transportation, deposition and diagenesis; formation of sedimentary structures; petrography of clastic and carbonate sedimentary rocks. Principles of hydrogeology. Groundwater flow and chemistry in sedimentary basins. Field mapping, including individual mapping projects.

On completion of this subject, students should have acquired an understanding of the process involved in the formation of sedimentary rocks and stratigraphic successions; be able to recognise, describe and interpret the common types of sedimentary rocks in the laboratory and in the field; and understand the processes controlling groundwater flow and chemistry in sedimentary rocks.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination; a 2-hour practical examination or reports totalling up to 1500 words.
