Subject Description

Students completing this subject should comprehend in some detail and depth the mathematical or statistical theory and techniques associated with some topic or topics of interest to staff members; have developed the ability to pursue mathematical or statistical themes at some depth and to work with a certain amount of independence; gain an insight into higher level mathematics and statistics. They should appreciate the methods and techniques required to complete an in-depth study of mathematical or statistical topics, the interaction of various branches of mathematics and statistics, and their use in problem-solving. The subject requires an in-depth study of one or more topics in analysis, algebra, geometry and topology, methods, modelling, optimisation, probability, statistics, or any other topic of interest to a staff member. Material will be presented through lectures, talks and seminars, and project work will be supervised by a staff member.
