Subject Description

Students completing this subject should comprehend in some detail and depth the mathematical or statistical theory and techniques associated with some topic or topics of interest to staff members; have developed the ability to pursue mathematical or statistical themes at some depth and to work with a certain amount of independence; gain an insight into higher level mathematics or statistics, and appreciate

  • the methods and techniques required to complete an in-depth study of mathematical or statistical topics;
  • the interaction of various branches of mathematics and statistics.

The subject requires regular attendance at seminars and group discussions together with the completion of selected projects. The work will be closely supervised by members of staff.

Assessment

Written reports and/or assignments (not more than 80 pages) and oral presentations.
