Subject Description

Aspects of the following topics will be considered: aspects of data transmission (synchronous and asynchronous transmission, error detection and correction, and compression) and local and wide area networks (architectures, protocols, and issues). Organisational options (data and telecommunications architectures, protocols, in-house networks, out-sourcing). Other telecommunications concepts.

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • understand the fundamentals of data communication and computer networks;
  • understand the interface standards and protocols associated with the Internet and other data networks;
  • be aware of the range of international standard protocols which achieve open systems interconnection;
  • understand the options organisations have for building or purchasing telecommunications services.

Assessment

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination, a group project taking 40-hours. The weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
