Subject Description

This subject covers topics selected in each of the following areas:

Polymers (12 lectures) - natural and synthetic polymers; classification and characterization; step-growth and chain-growth polymerization; silicones, silicates and zeolites.

Inorganic materials and processes (12 lectures) - materials: metals and alloys; perovskites and the structures of ceramic superconductors; non-stoichiometric materials; defect structures and semiconduction; intercalation; framework materials. Processes: reactivity of ligands at metal centres; homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic cycles; reaction mechanisms; experimental techniques.

Industrial Organic Chemistry (12 lectures) - manufacture of organic chemicals relevant to the chemical industry, including those used as feedstocks for polymer production.

Assessment

One 3-hour and one 1.5-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2.
