Subject Description

Inorganic Chemistry: On completion of this section, students should comprehend: fundamental bonding concepts in metal and non-metal compounds; the nature of organometallic and coordination compounds; metal-based catalytic processes of industrial importance.

Physical Chemistry: On completion of this section students should understand the concepts described for 610-210 Physical Chemistry II A. In addition, students should appreciate the concept of critical conditions and the various types of phase behaviour exhibited by binary mixtures; understand the conductivity of metals and semiconductors in terms of their structure at the atomic level; be able to relate the various defects in solids and at solid surfaces to the crystallisation, dissolution and strength of materials; understand the chemical mechanisms of the corrosion of metals.

Assessment

One three-hour and 2 x two-hour end of semester written examinations. Assignments not exceeding 9 pages.
