Subject Description

Students will undertake in-depth research in a single area (of choice) in physiology. Emphasis is placed on developing a strong background in hypothesis formulation and testing by experimental procedures to develop skills of interaction, communication, manuscript writing and up-to-date understanding in an area of contemporary physiology. Study is undertaken with a researcher in the Department, by mutual consent. The research subject will be first worked out between the student and the coordinator. Students should see the coordinator during the first semester to discuss potential research areas. Assignment work includes attendance at weekly Departmental Seminars and visiting the laboratory of an eminent physiologist to discuss issues of research and career development in relation to the specific research objective.

Assessment

A written report of up to 5,000 words on supervised research including experimental plan, experimental work and data analysis. A written assignment of up to 3000 words based on the research after visiting the external laboratory. Summaries of not more than 1000 words of two selected seminars.
