Subject Description

To extend and apply 536-201 Principles of Physiology to everyday life and, in particular, to the functional bases of health and well being. Topics include:

  • the genetic basis of the variation of a population;
  • male and female reproductive systems, alternative methods of fertilisation, birth control measures, growth and development throughout the life cycle, personal and public health issues arising from reproductive functions;
  • energy balance, nutrition: cellular basis and whole body status, the impact of contemporary diet and exercise patterns on body function;
  • the barriers to good health in current life-style patterns ethical issues related to recent development of human systems.

Assessment

A 1-hour exam (70%) and 6 laboratory reports (not more than 5 pages) (30%).
