Subject Description | The aim of this subject is to provide an understanding of how individual organ systems communicate and interact and use this knowledge to understand complex body processes. This subject is designed to present and discuss physiological principles in a way that will be directly relevant for later clinical understanding. Knowledge gained from this subject will be used to analyse and predict the physiological effects of changes in biological parameters and how physiological dysfunction contributes to signs and symptoms of disease. Major topics covered: the principles of endocrine control systems including hormone action and interaction with neural control mechanisms; control of metabolic and reproductive functions; the functional interrelationships that normally exist between the circulatory, respiratory, renal, digestive and haematopoietic systems. |
Assessment | A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination. |
