Prerequisites

At least two of Anatomy and Cell Biology 516-201, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 521-211 + 521-212 and 521-221 + 521-222 (Before 1997: 521-201 and 521-202), Physiology 536-201 and 536-202. From 1999 onwards the prerequisites include Basic Principles of Pathology, 531-201.

Semester

Contact

36 lectures (three a week) and a total of 52 hours practical (6 x 6h laboratory-based practicals; 4 x 4h written practicals)

Subject Description

Students completing this subject should be able to:

  • learn the principles of Pathology through the scientific study of the basis of physical diseases, their causes, mechanisms of development and the possible outcomes;
  • understand the defence and repair processes commonly used by the body when a malfunction of a tissue/organ occurs;
  • appreciate the spectrum and limitations of the possible biological mechanisms of response to injury, and be able to relate these mechanisms to those which have been established as the basis of normal cell/molecular biology;
  • comprehend the terminology of disease mechanisms;
  • begin to gain an understanding of the way in which questions about disease processes are formulated and the techniques applied to the investigation of these questions.

Practicals will comprise 6 hands-on laboratory exercises and 4 written exercises based on provided experimental data.

The topics to be studied are cell injury; repair, regeneration, fibrosis; infectious disease; immunopathology; haemo-dynamic disorders; vascular disease; genetic and developmental disorders; environmental and nutritional pathology; growth disorders including neoplasia.

Assessment

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination.
