Subject Description

Upon completion of this subject students should have:

  • an expanded knowledge and technical competency in preparation for future courses in Microbiology and Immunology
  • an understanding of fundamental life processes and host parasite relationships as illustrated in microorganisms
  • an appreciation of the value of good experimental planning and execution
  • the ability to analyse experimental results in a systematic fashion and communicate the results of an experiment orally and in writing.

The subject provides an introduction to diagnostic microbiology and mammalian cell culture, and investigations of some aspects of bacterial physiology and genetics.

The practical component will cover isolation and identification of potential human pathogens, enzyme assays, examination and analysis of bacterial populations, and cell culturing techniques, including passaging and staining.

Assessment

A 3-hour end-of -semester written examination including a practical component (60%), and continuous assessment of practical reports (40%).
