Subject Description | The major objectives are to: understand the principles relating to each of the general types of anatomical structures (somatic structures, visceral structures, vessels and nerves), the subdivision of the human body into regions (demarcated by anatomical landmarks) and the organisation of anatomical structures (which contribute to a common function) into systems, the essential information relating to specific anatomical structures which form the components both of the regions and of the systems; identify and interpret exposed anatomical structures and regions, surface markings on normal living bodies, structures involved in important movements, actions and reflexes, the naked-eye appearance of cut sections of normal viscera, sections of the body at important levels and planes, normal structures in radiological images, and structures observed, palpated, pierced or endangered in practical (including emergency) diagnostic and treatment procedures; develop skills for physical examination of the normal living body and skills in the manipulation of anatomical structures (with dissecting instruments); appreciate the range of normality of the living human body (normal variation) and the common occurrence of anomalies (anatomical variation). The major topics covered are: regional, radiological, surface and applied anatomy of the back and upper limb, thorax, neck and head. Emphasis is on clinically important aspects of anatomy. |
Assessment | A 3-hour written examination at the end of second semester on material from both semesters (50%); a 50-minute practical examination at the end of first semester (15%); a 25-minute practical examination at the end of second semester (15%); and practical (including dissection) class work throughout both semesters (20%). |
