Subject Description

This course forms the first of a three stage sequence of training in research methods in physiotherapy. Topics covered will include: criteria for evaluating published research, types of research designs, internal and external validity, descriptive statistics, measurement in physiotherapy, Z-scores, confidence intervals, significance testing, tests of differences between groups, and tests of relationships between variables. On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the principles of research methods and examples of their application in clinical research and practice as well as have developed skills in statistical computing and in critically evaluating published research.

Assessment

Assignments (20%) and 1.5 hour examination (80%).
