Subject Description

The principal objectives are to provide students with opportunities to (i) understand and apply appropriate design, methodology and measurement techniques for conducting psychological research, including the use of assessment techniques, (ii) critically examine historical and current theoretical models of psychology, (iii) acquire knowledge of at least two foundational areas of psychological enquiry, (iv) acquire knowledge of at least one applied area of psychological enquiry, (v) acquire skills for applying theoretical knowledge to psychological research, and (vi) demonstrate psychological knowledge and skills through written and oral expression. The content consists of six sections, of which three are compulsory: Psychological Measurement; Research Methods; and History/Theories of Psychology. The remaining three sections are chosen from a range offered by the Department or approved sections offered by other departments.

Assessment

For each section a written examination of up to two hours or a laboratory report or essay of up to 3000 words, or an examination of up to one hour and a report or essay of up to 2000 words. (Assessment for approved sections taken in other departments will be determined by that department.)

Pass Criteria: To obtain a pass in Psychology 3 subjects, students are normally required to meet the following criteria:

  • attempt all assessment components of the subject;
  • attend at least 75% of the total number of laboratory classes;
  • obtain a pass in each section of the subject. (A student who has failed one or two sections may, at the discretion of the department's Examination Board, obtain a pass (i) if a strong academic performance is achieved in the remaining sections or (ii) if given the opportunity, the student successfully completes a supplementary assessment in one or more sections.
