Subject Description

The principal objectives are to provide students with opportunities to (i) become acquainted with several of the broad areas of study and varied approaches that comprise the field of psychology including: biological basis of behaviour; social psychology; quantitative methods; human development; learning and memory; personality and abnormal psychology, (ii) acquire skills in the use and evaluation of scientific methodology and acquire skills in the critical evaluation of psychological literature and (iii) acquire skills in report writing as it applies to the study of psychology.

Assessment

Up to four hours of examinations and five hours of research participation. Laboratory reports and worksheets are also required.

Pass Criteria: To obtain a pass in Psychology 1, students are required to meet the following criteria:

  • sit all examinations and submit all required reports;
  • attend at least 75% of the total number of laboratory classes;
  • have participated in five hours of experimentation in projects approved for the subject pool;
  • have submitted written work as required indicating performance of laboratory work outside of class hours. (Such work will not exceed the equivalent of two hours per week.)
