511-206 Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Pharmacology

Subject Description

This subject covers the following areas: pathology of teeth and their supporting structures; pathology of the oral mucosa; systemic influences on the oral mucosa; introduction to pharmacology; and therapeutics in relation to diseases of the oral region.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

Have an understanding of the causes and pathogenesis of the common oral conditions; and the management of the common oral disorders. Be able to recognise oral pathology in the clinical situation and to instigate appropriate referral. Comprehend the relevance to dental care of the various medical conditions and associated therapies; Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of pharmacology in relation to drugs and other medical agents used in dentistry. Deliver a case presentation of a common oral condition in dental practice.

Assessment

(A) One 2-hour written examination at the end of first semester (55%);

(B) Written assignments and practical tests throughout first semester (30%);

(C) Case presentations at the end of first semester (15%).

A pass is required in Sections A and B for an overall pass in the subject.
