Subject Description

The study of technological systems and associated underlying scientific principles in the environmental and technological worlds relevant to primary children; the development of technological equipment and processes and their impact on the environment, for example, food production and processing, manufacturing, electronic systems, and technology and environmental change. Identification of sources of teaching materials, equipment and resources appropriate to the primary school level. The structure and content of the science and technology key learning areas of the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework. On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate detailed understanding of and ability to communicate about aspects of technological systems and the use of suitable materials for particular needs with the associated underlying scientific principles; clearly articulate their understandings of selected concepts in science and technology from within the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework; understand and be able to implement the science and technology key learning areas of the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework; understand the development of technological equipment and processes and the development of resources and products and evaluate their impact on the environment, and demonstrate a knowledge of sources of teaching materials, equipment and resources to create products appropriate to primary school classrooms.

Assessment

Written reports of workshop activities (1000 words), design and presentation of an activity to teach both science and technology to primary school students (1000 words), an assignment related to one of the studied aspects of the technological or environmental world, and a final 2-hour examination.
