Objectives

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of current mathematics programs and curricula issues in Years 7-12;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the mathematical needs of pupils in Years 7-12;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of appropriate mathematical learning/teaching strategies;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the ability to plan for the use of suitable materials and resources relating to the teaching of mathematics in Years 7-12;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of strategies for the assessment of and reporting on mathematical achievement; and
  • demonstrate the ability to plan and evaluate a sequence of lessons for a given Year 7-12 mathematical topic.

Content

An overview of selected issues, problems and methods important for the effective learning and teaching of secondary school mathematics. A study of relevant sections of the Mathematics Curriculum and Standards Framework and the VCE Mathematics Study Design as part of an exploration and examination of curricula, classroom techniques, lesson and unit planning, evaluation procedures, teaching resources, concrete learning materials, visual aids and methods of presenting important mathematical concepts.

Assessment

Essays and assignments equivalent to 4000 words.
