Subject Description

An overview of statistical techniques available to managers to assist with objective decision-making. This includes the use of exploratory data analysis techniques, introduction to probability and probability distributions, the applications of sampling distributions and estimation techniques, hypothesis testing using normal and student's t-distributions, applications of chi-square and other distribution-free procedures, simple regression and correlation, Monte-Carlo simulation, and an introduction to applications of statistical methods to total quality control. A feature is the high use of spreadsheet (MS Excel) and statistical software (Minitab) in the solution of practical business problems along with the completion of a research project and the provision of workshop material as World Wide Web documents.

Assessment

A 3-hour written final examination; a major research project equivalent to approximately 3000 words; and a 1-hour class test. Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment and submit all assignment work.
