Subject Description

The multiple facets in the overall professional practices of teachers; as curriculum designers and implementers, and as managers and facilitators of student learning.

Integration of learning areas into a coherent conceptual framework. Theories and strategies for refinement and improvement of practice. The realisation of this framework om curriculum and teaching plans that support meaningful and successful learning.

Gender, race and ethnicity issues, as they relate to nature and quality of teaching and learning, curriculum design, and classroom practice. Students welfare. Special education: special needs; integration.

Critical examination of current policy and debate about curriculum content and approaches for schools including study of alternatives in both theory and practice and the role of the profession in policy formation.

Epistemological, pedagogical and constructivist perspectives for teaching. Critiques of the construction of knowledge and pedagogy. The nature of disciplines and areas of study.

Teachers' work as members of the profession, and in relationship to families, groups and institutions; evaluation, appraisal and development of teacher performance.

Assessment

A series of assessment tasks totalling 4000 words.
