Objectives

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • review the cultural, historical, economic and industrial influences shaping vocational education and training;
  • analyse the various forms of work organisation and their economic, social, technological and political implications;
  • critically evaluate the impact of various technologies upon industry, vocational education;
  • understand contemporary issues of equity and access as they relate to vocational education and training;
  • evaluate government policies that relate to the provision of vocational education and training; and
  • identify selected reports that have influenced the history of vocational education and training.

Content

A study of theories of work and labour; perspectives on the impact of technological change; the organisation of the industrial process; equity and access in vocational education and training; major vocational education training reports and policy and the effect these have had on current education and training practices.

Assessment

A class paper of 3000 words (40%) and an essay of 4500 words (60%).
