Objectives

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate interpersonal practices for working with colleagues and students, that enable the development of constructive professional relationships and a positive learning environment;
  • recognise the diversity of learning needs and styles and potential barriers to learning within a group;
  • develop strategies for meeting learners' needs and enabling individuals to overcome learning difficulties they may experience; and
  • understand major theoretical perspectives on learning and the implications these have for educational practice and the development of lifelong learners.

Content

A study of: interpersonal and personal management skills; strategies for building learning group cultures; leadership styles and group processes; individual and cultural differences leading to particular difficulties in learning; models for understanding resistance to learning; an analysis of selected models of learning from different theoretical perspectives.

Assessment

One essay of 3000 words (40%) and one case study of 4500 words (60%).
