Subject Description

The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the contexts which shape the child's understanding of society, including ethnicity, politics and economics. The relationship between structural and cultural forces is explored to assess their significance in promoting social competence and identification. The impact of new technology and the media on early socialisation will be of particular interest. Research on how children develop an understanding of relevant social concepts and skills will be reviewed and analysed.

Assessment

An essay of 2500 words or equivalent task, and a 2-hour open-book examination.
