Subject Description

This subject explores key areas of research concerning the relationship between early language development and literacy. It focuses particularly on the development of symbolic and metalinguistic understanding and the roles of biology and environment in this development. There will be a balance of child-centred and ecological perspectives in the examination of these issues. The subject will also explore cross-cultural research on language acquisition and literacy and will examine the impact of minority language status on the development of literacy. This study of developmental research will provide the framework for an evaluation of the role of families in literacy development and the strategies used in kindergartens and schools to foster language and literacy development.

Assessment

An essay and an examination.
