Subject Description

This subject is a study of psychological and sociological theory and research relevant to early childhood development in the domains of cognitive, language, social and moral development and their practical applications. The specific dimensions of child development introduced in the first year of Child Development Studies will be analysed in depth and there will be advanced coverage of selected theories which support an enhanced understanding in these various dimensions. Students will undertake observation tasks which draw on the ability to apply selected methods of research. The significance of social context with particular focus on the family and child care contexts will be covered.

Assessment

Two essays of 1500 words each or equivalent tasks and a 2-hour examination.
