Subject Description

This subject is concerned with the concept of leadership with particular reference to the early childhood field. Topics will include; different leadership models; working with parents, both as individuals and in groups, and with colleagues and other professionals; developing networks and working with government and non-government agencies; methods of communication and selecting the appropriate medium for communication; identification of typical problems associated with the communication process; participative decision making in the centre and the political dimension associated with this; sources of power and influence; different models of decision making; how groups reach decisions; the role of the meeting and the appropriate conduct of different kinds of meetings; policy development and the role that early childhood professionals may play as advocates in helping to shape this in a wider setting.

Assessment

Essays and assignments totalling 4000 words.
