Subject Description

This subject will explore the central significance of language and literacy in human society and culture. Topics will include: the nature of language as a semiotic system; language as a social phenomenon; language and cultural diversity; the functions of language; language and literacy in the enculturation of young children; differences between oral and written language; text-types as structured by social purposes; language and texts as carriers of social values; reading as a negotiation between reader and text; the range of textual media; reading visual texts. The work in the subject will centre on the use of language of and with young children, and especially on the range of texts, drawn from a diversity of cultural traditions, that might be presented to young children, the nature of these texts and the purposes they serve.

Assessment

Essays and assignments totalling 4,000 words.
