Subject Description | The objective of this subject is to present mathematical theories which provide a foundation for later studies in astronomy, map projections, geodesy and least squares estimation. Topics covered include: Spherical and Spheroidal Trigonometry - fundamental principles and formulae, spherical and ellipsoidal coordinates, position vectors for points on sphere and ellipsoid, coordinate transformations between curvilinear, geocentric cartesian and local coordinate systems. Introduction to Least Squares - variance matrices and their propagation, the multi-variate normal probability density function, development of least squares algorithms, determination of error ellipses. |
Assessment | Not more than three hours of written examinations and tests, and not more than the equivalent of 20 pages of written assignments and reports on practical work. The relative weighting of the assessment components will be published at the commencement of the subject |
